Review of Planning in the Swan Valley

The WAPC and Department of Planning are seeking comment on Planning in the Swan Valley.

The Swan Valley is one of the key regional attractions in the Perth Metropolitan Region.  It is the State’s oldest wine region, with viticulture activity beginning about 180 years ago.  The viticulture and tourism industries in the valley are regionally significant, along with the environmental and landscape values of the area.

Planning and development in the valley is governed largely by the City of Swan Local Planning Scheme and the Swan Valley Planning Act.  While the City’s scheme focusses on the broader land use issues within the valley and beyond, the Swan Valley Planning Act and the body that manages the Act – the Swan Valley Planning Committee – have a particular focus on protecting the agricultural, tourist and viticultural industries in the valley, as well as maintaining the high amenity landscape.

As part of the ongoing improvement of the planning system, the Western Australian Planning Commission/Department of Planning has released a Discussion Paper “Swan Valley Land Use and Management". The discussion paper has been based on investigations undertaken by the Swan Valley Planning Committee in collaboration with the City of Swan and the Department of Planning.  The paper covers a range of issues such as:

  • land use and activities
  • landscape assessment
  • land capability and capacity
  • economics
  • planning and regulatory framework.

The Discussion Paper is currently available for review and submissions are invited.

A copy of the Discussion Paper and Submission Form can be found here.  Land Insights will be lodging a submission based on our previous experiences of our clients in the Swan Valley.

Submissions need to be lodged by the 31st December 2012.
