Coastal Management Planning

Land Insights created a Foreshore Management Plan for Town Beach Broome to help the Shire of Broome protect and enhance one of its most valued coastal destinations. Known for its pindan cliffs, open spaces and deep Yawuru cultural ties, Town Beach attracts both locals and tourists. The plan sets out a long-term approach to keep the area accessible, safe and resilient as coastal conditions change.

We worked directly with the Shire, Yawuru representatives and community members throughout the project. Together, we developed a plan that balances erosion management, public access and cultural heritage protection. Importantly, the strategy builds on earlier coastal studies and aligns with policies like CHRMAP and State Planning Policy 2.6.

Our team carried out detailed site analysis, looking at vegetation, infrastructure, landforms and land use. In addition, we met with stakeholders on-site, conducted surveys and facilitated community discussions to understand local values and goals. As a result, the plan includes practical, low-impact actions such as a boardwalk near the Pindan Headland, improved signage, and measures to protect dunes and vegetation.

The Council formally adopted the plan in May 2024. Key outcomes include the use of the “Accommodate” strategy for managing erosion and coastal hazards. It also commits to protecting culturally sensitive areas through ongoing collaboration with Traditional Owners. Finally, the plan outlines a clear framework for implementing and monitoring future works.

This project demonstrates how well-informed planning and strong collaboration can deliver lasting benefits for coastal communities.
